Welcome and congratulations on your engagement. Planning an engagement session in New York City comes with a unique set of opportunities and considerations, and this guide is designed to help you approach it with clarity and intention.
New York offers an incredible range of settings, from quiet, romantic corners to more architectural and editorial backdrops. The way your session comes together is less about a single location and more about how everything works together — timing, styling, movement, and the overall experience.
This is where thoughtful planning makes the difference. From choosing the right time of year and time of day, to building a wardrobe that feels elevated and cohesive, each element plays a role in creating photos that feel natural, refined, and distinctly New York.
The goal is not just to document the moment, but to create something that feels effortless, considered, and true to how you want to see yourselves.

The NYC Engagement photography guide

No matter the season, timing plays a huge role in how your photos look and feel. In New York City, we always recommend planning your session for when the light is softest and the city feels a little quieter. This typically means starting a couple hours before sunset for that warm, golden light, or just after sunrise if you want to avoid crowds and have some of the city’s most iconic spots almost entirely to yourselves.

If you're planning on using your engagement photos for your save-the-dates, we encourage you to schedule your session at least two months before you're planning on sending your save-the-dates to ensure ample time for possible rescheduling due to weather, editing, and designing and printing your save-the-dates.

We encourage our couples to send save-the-dates 6-8 months before the wedding if it's local, and 8-10 months for a destination wedding.

Weather in New York City can be unpredictable, which is why we approach scheduling thoughtfully from the start.
We do not photograph engagement sessions in the rain, as it impacts not only the images, but the overall experience — from hair and makeup to how you feel throughout the session.
Instead, we build flexibility into your planning and will reschedule when needed to ensure you’re photographed in the best possible conditions. The goal is for you to feel comfortable, confident, and fully present — and to see yourselves in the best light.
Indoor sessions can absolutely be an option when it aligns with your vision, but we always guide you toward what will feel most natural, elevated, and true to you.

We always love when our couples choose to include their pets in their engagement session. Including your pet adds a personal and meaningful layer to your photos, especially in a city like New York where your everyday life becomes part of your story.
Thoughtful styling and planning make all the difference. From choosing a pet-friendly location to ensuring your pet is comfortable and relaxed, we guide you through what will work best for your vision.
We typically recommend bringing treats, a leash that complements your outfits, and having a friend available to assist when needed. This allows us to incorporate your pet naturally, while still keeping the focus on the two of you.
We often begin with your pet and then transition into the rest of your session, so the experience feels seamless and refined from start to finish.

We love your furry family members.

We always encourage choosing elements that feel natural to your relationship and make the experience more fun and relaxed. Thoughtful styling also plays an important role here. Incorporating pieces like a handbag or sunglasses can subtly elevate your overall look while still feeling effortless and chic. We typically recommend planning two outfits, one more elevated and refined, and another that feels relaxed and natural, creating a balanced and cohesive final gallery.

our tips for looking and feeling your best

WHAT TO WEAR FOR YOUR NYC ENGAGEMENT SESSION

Wondering how you can make your nyc engagement photos look more editorial?

NYC style leans toward clean lines, tailored pieces, and a balance of refined and relaxed. For example, if one of you is in tailored trousers, the other might wear a structured dress in a complementary neutral. If one of you is in softer textures or subtle patterns, the other can keep it minimal with classic, well-fitted pieces. The goal is to feel coordinated in a way that looks polished and chic.

When choosing outfits, avoid trying to match exactly. Instead, focus on complementing each other through a cohesive color palette and overall feel.

Most of our couples bring two outfits—one formal and dressy, and one more casual outfit.

Long, flowy dresses look incredible in photos because of the added movement and texture. We encourage you to opt for a dress or two as opposed to pants, shorts, or jumpsuits. Don't forget about the accessories!

Choose a dress over something casual, you won't regret it!
